Welcome to...

 The Chosen Ones

A New Novel by Author John L. Hough

Daily Journal

John Matries, Chief of Operations; Project Human Race

April 7 2088

Early this morning James Allen died after a long battle with the unidentified form of cancer that has been plaguing my control staff. He is the third member of my staff to succumb to these terrible illnesses that are now effecting us all. It is with great trepidation that I have determined we must move the project into it’s final phase.

We no longer have an adequate staff to maintain the life support systems required to keep The Chosen Ones secure from contamination. Although Bruce is concerned that they have not yet learned enough from the elders to survive on their own, in my opinion, there is no other option. With this in mind, I have ordered the evacuation of The Chosen Ones to a more secure location. One that is far away from the last of the known inhabitants of modern civilization. I fear if they stay here my staff will infect them with diseases for which they have no natural immunities.

It is not lightly that I take this step. The Chosen Ones are like my own family, whom I am casting out into the world to live or die on their own. With an omniscient point of view, I have watched them all from birth, without ever having been able to convey to any of them the love and compassion that I feel as any father would for his children.

I have watched, as their skills in hunting and gathering necessary plants for survival have grown to a point beyond what I thought was possible when we started this project so long ago. My faith in the elders who taught them to live as the Native Americans before the arrival of the Europeans is compromised, and I am afraid that if we do not move forward immediately, we are destined to failure.

Every resource available to my command has been exhausted in an effort to contact any survivors, wherever they may be located in the world. It is my belief, that we are the last surviving humans on the planet, and my staff and I are now the biggest danger to the success of the project.

Tomorrow, Bruce will hand over leadership of the tribe to a younger man of our mutual choosing. It will be up to him to lead them into the future of humanity. If we are wrong, or have failed them in any way, this could very well be the end of  humanity. God help us all....
